Singing America

I, too, sing America

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes,
Nobody'll dare
Say to me
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.
—Langston Hughes

  1. How very strange, that I was reading this very poem myself, yesterday, and admiring it.

  2. I haven't read it, but it's powerful.

  3. That's odd, because I was just surfing the web and came across it. I want to follow up on him some more. I had heard of him, of course, but never read his stuff.
