I rode in on a Greyhound, I'll be walking out if I go

  1. Back in the day, when this reoord came out, I think it was the b-side of Bad Moon Rising, I would listen and listen, trying to figure out the refrain, I just could not make it into any sort of coherent english.
Partly because I was flummoxed by Lodi. What's a lodi? Of course, before the internets, I had no idea. Now of course, I know it's a Californian city, with a population at census of 62,130 souls.
Here in britain we'd call it a town. City implies big.
Anyway, I know also that it regards itself as the "Zinfandel Capital of the World". In the song, Mr Fogerty makes it sound like the armpit of the universe. On google street-view it doesn't look so bad at all.

As for that "I rode in on a greyhound, I'll be walking out when I go", well, I'd like to point out that a greyhound, whilst fast, is not a very large, nor a particularly robust type of hound. No wonder he'll be walking, the poor thing probably died of exhaustion.
Maybe he could take the bus.....

  2. Small, but it has a cathedral. :)

City doesn't imply big. It implies the citizens have chosen a certain form of governance. They can change it to a village or whatever again if they vote it in. They have "towns" in New York State, but there that word doesn't mean what you think it means.

    Capital G, please.

What is Zinfandel? Wine? Are you kidding? Of the world? Must be a joke.
